Curriculum

The summer program is our biggest program, and runs Monday through Fridays for 6 – 7 weeks over the summer.  The dates vary every year, but it usually starts at the beginning of July until the middle of August. Each class is 3 hours long per day.

 
3rd Grade
Math & Reading Enrichment Class

Our 3rd grade math and reading enrichment class is designed for students who will be entering the 3rd grade in September. The class focuses on introducing your child to 3rd grade level mathematics and English language arts. Mathematics topics include operations drills as well as word problems. ELA focuses on reading comprehension and vocabulary words. Summer classes include a math, a reading, and a vocabulary quiz every week, and math and reading homework every day.

Creative Writing

Our 3rd grade creative writing class is designed to introduce your child to the creative writing process. The class will focus on reading and writing stories, fiction, and non-fiction.

4th Grade
Math & Reading Enrichment Class

Our 4th grade math and reading enrichment summer class is designed for students who will be entering the 4th grade in September. The class focuses on introducing your child to 4th grade level mathematics and English language arts. Mathematics topics include multiplication & division, as well as word problems. ELA focuses on reading comprehension and vocabulary words. Summer classes include a math, a reading, and a vocabulary quiz every week, and math and reading homework every day.

Creative Writing

Our 4th grade creative writing class focuses on working with your child to improve his/her writing ability. The class will focus on reading and writing stories, fiction, and non-fiction. The class will also teach basic grammar concepts, and composition best practices.

5th Grade
Math & Reading Enrichment Class

Our 5th grade math and reading enrichment summer class is designed for students who will be entering the 4th grade in September. The class focuses on introducing your child to 5th grade level mathematics and English language arts. Mathematics topics include fractions, percentages, and measurements, as well as word problems. ELA focuses on reading comprehension and vocabulary words. Summer classes include a math, a reading, and a vocabulary quiz every week, and math and reading homework every day.

Creative Writing

Our 5th grade creative writing class focuses on working with your child to improve his/her writing ability. The class will focus on reading and writing both fiction and nonfiction narratives, as well as opinion pieces, letters, poems and other creative writing materials. The class will also teach grammar concepts, and composition best practices.

6th Grade
Hunter HS Prep Class

The Hunter High School Prep class is designed to specially prepare your child for the Hunter college High School entrance examination that takes place in January of his/her 6th grade year. The class focuses on high school level math word problems, as well as reading comprehension and sentence correction problems found on the exam. The class also has a corresponding writing class component that trains their ability to write cohesive essays given a chosen topic in a limited amount of time.

Our 6th grade math and reading enrichment class is designed for students who will be entering the 6th grade in September. The class focuses on preparing your child for junior high school level mathematics and English language arts. Summer classes include a math, a reading, and a vocabulary quiz every week, and math and reading homework every day.

Creative Writing

Our 6th grade creative writing class is designed to improve your child’s writing ability. The class will focus on all types of writing styles, from biographies to Op-Ed pieces. The class will also train your child to write a cohesive essay given a chosen topic within a short time frame – as will be required during standardized exams.

7th Grade
Pre-SHSAT Prep Class

The Pre-SHSAT prep class is the highest of our 7th grade classes, and begins to prepare your child for the SHSAT exam. The class will include half 7th grade material and half SHSAT material, so your child can start to get a feel for the exam topics and question types. In order to be placed into this class, your child has to take score high on the A+ Academy entrance exam.

The class focuses on preparing your child for 7th grade level mathematics and English language arts. Summer classes include a math, a reading, and a vocabulary quiz every week, and math and reading homework every day.

8th Grade
SHSAT Prep Class

Our SHSAT classes are specifically designed to prepare your child for the SHSAT exam, that takes place at the end of October of his/her 8th grade year. This class will consist of 1.5 hours of math everyday and 1.5 hours of Verbal every day. The math portion includes algebra, geometry, and word problems. The verbal portion includes scrambled paragraphs, logic reasoning, and reading comprehension. Your child will be placed into the appropriate SHSAT level class based on his/her A+ Academy entrance exam score.

9th Grade
9th Grade Enrichment

Our 9th grade math and reading enrichment class is designed for students who will be entering the 9th grade in September. The class focuses on preparing your child for high school level mathematics and verbal. Our math classes are divided into Algebra or Geometry class, depending on what your child will be taking at school in his 9th grade. Our English class will focus on reading comprehension as well as in class discussion of debate topics and analysis of current events.

10th Grade
PSAT Prep Class (Math & Verbal)

Our PSAT class is designed for students who will be entering the 10th grade in September. The class focuses on introducing your child to the PSAT exam, as well as preparing your child for his/her 10th grade math class. The math portion of this PSAT class will be split between PSAT math and either geometry or trigonometry, depending on what your child will be taking in his 10th grade. The verbal portion of the class will be focused on PSAT reading and writing.

11th Grade
SAT I Prep Class (Math & Verbal)

Our SAT class is designed for students who will be entering the 11th or 12th grade in September. The class focuses on preparing your child for the SAT exam. Students will be placed into his/her SAT class based on the results of his/her A+ Academy entrance exam, by subject. Students with higher math and lower verbal abilities, will be placed accordingly into his/her math and verbal classes. The math portion of this class will include all four SAT math categories: numbers & operations, algebra & functions, geometry & measurements, and data analysis, probability and statistics. The verbal portion of the class will be focused passage based reading, sentence completion as well as grammar and SAT essay writing.

12th Grade
SAT I Prep Class (Math & Verbal)

Our SAT class is designed for students who will be entering the 11th or 12th grade in September. The class focuses on preparing your child for the SAT exam. Students will be placed into his/her SAT class based on the results of his/her A+ Academy entrance exam, by subject.
